BARKER WINS MORRIS FAREWELL Friday 02 September 2011
BEN Barker added the name of three-times World Champion Jason Crump to his impressive list of Perry Barr scalps this season in the Final of the Phil Morris Farewell meeting.
Crump had gone through the card with four wins out of four for the World All-Stars in the 14-heat team contest, although that wasn’t enough to stop the Great Britain Select from notching a win by a 12-point margin.
But the individual Final for the top four scorers in the meeting proved to be the big highlight of a successful event which attracted a big crowd in support of former Brummies star Morris.
Crump, off the outside, didn’t make the best of starts and found himself stuck in traffic early on, before clearing Lee Richardson and moving into third place.
Barker, though, had stolen a march up front and was some way clear after two laps, only to be reeled in by an inspired Lewis Bridger, who surged into the lead going into turns three and four for the final time.
Barker, however, got his wheels back in line quicker and re-took the lead coming out of the final bend to just beat the Eastbourne man to the finishing line for a popular win.
Morris was delighted with how his big night went. He said: “I was so pleased that the fans enjoyed it all. There was some great racing – particularly in the final – but I must say it’s a very emotional evening for me.
“There’s been a lot of hard work put in by a lot of people to get us here tonight and I am eternally grateful to all of them.
“The riders were brilliant and the large turn out of supporters is simply overwhelming.
“Thank you to everyone who made it all possible.”
